A volcano you climb at 2 am for flames that burn blue and a crater lake so acidic its pH sits near zero. Compare Mount Ijen tours by departure point and what the price includes, from a $12 Banyuwangi trek to a four-day train loop out of Yogyakarta.
Quick answer
We currently compare 18 Mount Ijen tours across five formats. Staying in Banyuwangi, a guided midnight trek costs $12 to $15 with entrance, gas mask and guide included. Based in Bali, round trips run $37 to $106 and use the Gilimanuk ferry, so expect 18 to 28 hours door to door. Doing Java overland, the multi-day Bromo combos start at $93 and the train-based Yogyakarta loops at $189. Every hiker also needs a health certificate, which most tours arrange on the way up.
Key takeaways

Prices are the from-price per person read from GetYourGuide in August 2026; multi-day tours vary by tier (homestay against 3–4★ hotel) and group size, and several listings discount from the printed rate on specific dates. The range across this page runs $12 to $473.

Four questions settle it: where are you sleeping tonight, do you want the blue fire or just the sunrise, how much driving can you stomach, and is Bromo on the list too.
Book a day trek and keep your money for the rest of Java. The $12 to $15 listings cover the entrance fee, a gas mask and a licensed guide, which is roughly what you would pay arranging the same pieces yourself. The difference between the three is the operator: the Ijen volcano sunrise tour with pickup and a professional guide is the volume leader with 1,863 reviews at a flat 5.0 and a guide, Haqim, whom reviewers book by name; the Kawah Ijen midnight trek and sunrise experience is the cheapest way up; the all-inclusive sunrise Ijen hike from Banyuwangi or Bali bundles the health-check appointment and breakfast.
All three put you at the gates for the 2:00 am opening.
Accept the maths first: Ijen sits a ferry crossing and 1.5 hours of mountain road beyond Gilimanuk, so a from-Bali trip costs you a night of sleep however it is packaged. The 24-hour tour with dinner and room is the honest version — it leaves Seminyak at 1 pm, feeds you, and gives you a bed until the midnight start. The small-group overnight run compresses the same loop into 18 to 28 hours without the hotel, and the budget private does it cheapest at $37 if you can self-transfer the Bali ferry leg.
Expect to be back at your hotel between 4:30 and 7 pm.
Take a multi-day combo and let the tour absorb the logistics: the Surabaya–Tumpak Sewu–Bromo–Ijen chain involves four transfers and two pre-dawn starts that are miserable to self-arrange. The $93 2-day hits both volcanoes and nothing else; the 3-day trips add Tumpak Sewu waterfall; the best-selling 3D2N ends with a drop-off in Ubud, Kuta or Canggu, which quietly replaces a $50+ Bali transfer day. Budget tiers sleep in homestays with shared rooms, standard tiers in 3–4★ hotels — the itineraries are identical.
The train options exist because the Yogyakarta–East Java drive is brutal: eight-plus hours each way on roads that reviewers of the cheaper tours consistently flag as the worst part. The executive train does the same leg in comfort, and the night-train version folds the transfer into sleeping hours with a hot-springs stop between volcanoes. Train tickets sell out days in advance in July and August, so these tours' main service is holding seats you could not get yourself at a week's notice.
Solo is legal, cheaper from Bali than most people expect, and the right call for some travellers. Price out the pieces before you decide.
From Banyuwangi you need: the entrance fee (100,000 IDR weekdays, 150,000 IDR weekends), transport to the trailhead at midnight — a shared car runs about 125,000 IDR per person with 5 or 6 people, an ojek about 200,000 IDR — a gas mask rental near the gate at around 40,000 IDR, and the health certificate at roughly 50,000 IDR from a local clinic. Call it 315,000 to 440,000 IDR per person, or $19 to $27, before you have eaten anything. A $12 to $15 trek includes all four pieces, which is why the cheap listings are not a trap: the operators buy entrance and transport at local rates and make their margin on volume.
You ride your own bike (over 110cc — the ascent defeats smaller scooters), you stay in Licin at the foot of the volcano rather than 1.5 hours away in central Banyuwangi, and you want to set your own pace with no group to wait for. Sleeping in Licin puts you five minutes from the gate, and a couple of homestays there are run by former sulfur miners. Buy the ticket online through the official park site or ask your accommodation to handle it, get the health certificate the afternoon before, and follow the car route on Google Maps — the motorbike shortcut it suggests is a broken track that takes longer.
There is also a camping area near Paltuding at about 5,000 IDR, but it is cold, bare, and downwind of the sulfur on the wrong nights.
Independent travellers have chained Surabaya to Bromo to Ijen to Bali on public transport for under €100 where organised private tours quote €380 to €430 — the train legs cost 30,000 to 200,000 IDR and the guesthouse nights under €6. The catch is time and negotiation: every leg is a separate haggle, the vans between Cemoro Lawang and Probolinggo leave when full, and train tickets sell out days ahead. The $93 two-day combo and $157 three-day exist precisely in the gap between those two numbers, which is why the DIY route has become a fitness-and-patience choice rather than the obvious money-saver it was a decade ago.
The numbers below are for foreign visitors and were checked in August 2026. Every tour on this page includes the entrance fee unless its listing states otherwise.
The Kawah Ijen entrance fee is 100,000 IDR on weekdays and 150,000 IDR on weekends and public holidays — about $6 and $9. Indonesian nationals pay a fraction of that, which is normal across the national parks. Buying solo, use the official online portal (clunky, works) or hand the job to your accommodation.
On a tour you will never see the ticket; it is bought in bulk before you arrive at Paltuding.
Since 6 January 2024, every hiker must show a health certificate confirming fitness for the climb. Local clinics issue them for about 50,000 IDR after a blood-pressure check; tours either book the appointment en route or run their own check at the basecamp. The rule bars people with heart conditions, pregnant travellers and children under 3, and operators additionally screen for asthma and fear of heights before selling the crater descent.
It is a real check, not a formality — bring the paper.
Hiking runs 2:00 am to 2 pm year-round. Three closures to plan around: Ijen shuts entirely the first Friday of every month; the park can open late or not at all after rain in the wet season; and volcanic activity closes either the crater descent or the whole mountain on short notice — the descent to the lake has been restricted repeatedly since the 2024 seismic activity. Check status the day before, or let the operator do it: tours reroute to a rim-only itinerary when the descent is shut, solo hikers find out at the gate.
Local porters push tourists up the steep sections in modified carts — locals call them trolleys, drivers call them taxis. The full round trip runs 600,000 to 1,000,000 IDR depending on your weight, the season and your bargaining, which can exceed the cost of the entire tour that brought you there. It is punishing work on a 600 m climb; if you take the deal, negotiate before post 1 and pay what you agreed.
The shape of a standard Banyuwangi day trek — the format most people book. From-Bali tours join this timeline at the basecamp, having crossed on the evening ferry.
Collection from hotels between 23:00 and 23:30. Wear the warm layers now; the van is the last warm place you will sit for six hours.
The 1.5 hours of switchbacks end at the trailhead at 1,850 m. Briefing, health check if your tour runs its own, mask fitting, and coffee from the stalls that stay open all night.
The trail is 3.5 km one way with about 600 m of elevation gain. The first two kilometres are the steep ones, on a wide sandy track. Rest posts 3 and 5 have toilets and stalls selling hot drinks and instant noodles; the crater has nothing.
Ninety minutes of walking puts most people on the rim. If the descent is open and your certificate allows it, the drop to the blue fire takes about 25 minutes down a steep, unrailed path — the hardest stretch of the night.
Burning sulfuric gas, visible only in darkness. Some nights it is a wall of blue flame; some nights cloud or the miners' work reduces it to flickers. No operator promises it, and the ones that seem to are overselling.
Back up top, walk to the sunrise viewpoint at about 2,386 m. First light is the reveal: the turquoise lake, a kilometre wide and 200 m deep, appearing out of black. Guides run coffee breaks here; it is cold enough that you will want one.
Daylight shows you the trail you climbed blind, and the miners coming up past you for their first load. Give way — they are carrying more than you are.
Vans drop at hotels through the morning. From-Bali groups continue to Ketapang port for the ferry and reach south Bali hotels between 4:30 and 7 pm.
The sulfur adds two items no other Indonesian trek needs. Everything else is standard cold-start hiking kit.
A gas mask, because sulfur clouds shift with the wind and hit the trail as well as the crater — every tour on this page provides one, and solo hikers rent near the gate for about 40,000 IDR. And a headlamp, because the first four hours happen in full darkness on uneven ground; tours lend these too, but your own fits better. Skip the paper masks sold in Banyuwangi minimarts; they do nothing against SO₂.
Pre-dawn on the rim runs 0 to 8°C from June to October and 8 to 12°C the rest of the year; by late morning the same mountain sits at 22 to 30°C. Layers, a windproof jacket, a beanie and gloves for the summit, and something light underneath for the walk down. Shoes with real grip — the descent path is sandy over rock and slides in the wet. Trekking poles rent cheaply at the base and earn their keep on the way down.
Water and snacks, because the stalls at posts 3 and 5 are the last supply points. Sunscreen for the descent. Cash in small notes for coffee, toilets and the mask deposit.
And take off silver jewellery before you go up: sulfur gas tarnishes silver black in a single night, rings included.
Honest difficulty: moderate. People of all ages summit every night. The risks are specific and worth knowing by name.
3.5 km up with 600 m of gain takes about 1.5 hours at a normal pace, on a track that is steep and loose in stretches but never technical — no climbing, no exposure on the ascent. The crowding is real: in July and August you will walk in a chain of headlamps. There are no prizes for arriving first; the blue fire does not start without you.
The optional 900 m path from the rim down to the blue fire is steep, uneven, unrailed and shared with climbing miners, all in darkness. Wind shifts can push a sulfur cloud across it with no warning — eyes and lungs sting even through the mask, and the standard advice is to crouch, hold position and wait it out rather than run. Operators refuse the descent to anyone with asthma, heart conditions or vertigo, and since the 2024 seismic activity the park closes it whenever gas readings spike.
Skipping it is a legitimate choice; the sunrise alone justifies the night.
May through October is the dry season and the reliable window; July and August are the crowded peak. In the wet months the track turns into a slide on the way down, the park opens late or not at all, and cloud sits on the crater more nights than not. Sporadic rain happens year-round — pack the raincoat regardless of month.
Ijen is a working mine before it is a tourist attraction, and has been since 1968.
Miners break cooled sulfur at the lake edge with steel bars, load wicker baskets with up to 90 kg, and carry them up the same unrailed path tourists descend, then 3 km more to the weighing post at the car park — most without masks, many in rain boots or sandals, for under €0.06 per kilo. One or two loads a day is the physical limit. Photograph respectfully, buy the small sulfur carvings they sell if you want to put money directly in their hands, and above all give way on the narrow path: they are on the clock and you are on holiday.
Several guides on the tours compared here are former miners or miners' sons, and their commentary is the part of the night reviewers quote back.
Every route to Ijen funnels through Banyuwangi, the town at Java's eastern tip. It has its own airport with domestic connections, a train station on the Java main line, and the Ketapang ferry port thirty minutes north — which is why the day treks collect there and why sleeping there the night before is the least painful version of this whole exercise. From the town it is 1.5 hours of switchbacks to the Paltuding trailhead; there is no public transport on that road at midnight, so the leg is either your tour's van, a pre-arranged car, or your own motorbike over 110cc.
From Surabaya, Malang or Yogyakarta the trains are the civilised option — reserved seats, on time, and immune to Java's traffic. The catch is availability: seats sell out days ahead in season and station counters keep short hours, which is exactly the leverage the train-based tours use by holding seats in advance. The road versions of the same journey run five to eight hours and are the single most complained-about component in multi-day tour reviews.
If you are stitching the trip together yourself, book rail early and build the day around the timetable, not the other way round.
From Bali, the Gilimanuk–Ketapang ferry crosses the strait in about an hour and runs around the clock, no booking needed — foot passengers queue, pay small change and board. That simplicity is why the from-Bali tours can promise a door-to-door loop, and why the budget version at $37 can hand you the crossing and still work. The drive from south Bali to the port is the real cost: about 4 hours each way, which no operator can compress.
Qim Qim is the best guide you can ever ask for when you go on a hike. Tour was well organised to every detail. We were the first ones at their check post at Mt. Ijen. All of the guides with Qim Qim are really friendly and very helpful, especially Jerry who helped us a lot and gave us individual attention while descending down the crater to view the blue flames.
Surai was our guide for today. It was very busy at Ijen as always around this time of the year, but he found us a route that made it possible that we could see the blue flames with just a few people, see the sunrise at exact the same time it came up and also he found us a spot where we could take the best pictures of the lake and crater.
A great experience. Everyone on the team was great. The food was amazing. Breakfast is huge, so I advise you to be prepared for endless plates. We were the first group to go down to the lake before sunrise.
The sightseeing tour is excellent. I would only change some aspects of Ijen, since the blue flames are very crowded, and especially the return to Bali is very, very long and tiring with so many stops. After getting up at midnight, I think it would be ideal to arrive at your hotel sooner. But the sightseeing tour is amazing and highly recommended.
Activity was very well organised. Transport was on time and all guides and drivers gave an excellent service. Volcanoes are both breathtaking and both offer a wonderful experience. Mount Ijen was an unforgettable adventure.
Scheduling could be improved to allow more time for sleep. Mt. Ijen is not safe for climbing down and up again without risking injury. The views were amazing, Tumpak Sewu was the best one out of the three, and the guides were stellar across all activities.
Verified GetYourGuide reviews for the tours on this page, quoted with their original dates.
The hike itself is about 1.5 hours up and an hour down, but the visit is built around darkness: gates open at 2:00 am, the blue fire shows before dawn, sunrise lands around 5:30. A Banyuwangi day trek runs roughly 23:00 to 09:00 door to door. From Bali, the ferry and the drive stretch the same climb to 18 to 28 hours, and the multi-day combos fold it into a 2-to-4-day East Java loop.
Priced against doing it alone, yes for most travellers: the $12 to $15 treks cost about the same as the DIY pieces (entrance, midnight transfer, mask, certificate) and remove every logistics step. The experience itself — blue flames, a kilometre-wide acid lake at pH near 0, sunrise over the crater — is the reason Ijen anchors every East Java itinerary. Our full worth-it breakdown weighs it audience by audience. The honest caveat: peak-season crowds and the sleep deficit are part of the deal, and travellers who hate 2 am starts do not stop hating them because the view is good.
Yes. Buy the ticket online or through your accommodation, get the health certificate at a clinic the day before, rent a mask at the gate for about 40,000 IDR, and arrange midnight transport — about 125,000 IDR per person in a shared car or 200,000 IDR by ojek. Staying in Licin, at the foot of the mountain, shortens the night considerably; riding your own motorbike, bring something over 110cc or the ascent road will defeat it. The DIY guide maps the whole route with pins. The maths lands within a few dollars of a budget tour, so solo is a preference, not a saving.
Moderate: 3.5 km one way, about 600 m of elevation gain, 1.5 hours up on a steep but non-technical track. People of all ages do it every night, including hikers who would not call themselves fit. The genuinely hard part is optional — the 900 m descent to the blue fire is steep, unrailed and dark, and the park bars it for anyone with asthma, heart conditions or pregnancy. Since January 2024 every hiker needs a health certificate confirming they are fit to climb.
The full range on this page runs $12 to $473, checked August 2026. Banyuwangi day treks are $12 to $15; private day tours $37 to $86; from-Bali round trips $37 to $106; multi-day Bromo combos $93 to $473 depending on group size and hotel tier; train-based loops $189 to $290. Every fee, from the entrance line to the porter cart, sits in the 2026 cost guide. The gap between the cheapest and priciest 3-day combo is mostly private-car-versus-shared-van and hotel class, not the itinerary.
No, and treat any listing that implies otherwise with suspicion. The flames are burning sulfuric gas, visible only in darkness — roughly 2 to 4 am — and their size varies with volcanic activity, wind and cloud. Miners sometimes damp sections of the flame to protect sulfur production, and the park closes the crater descent entirely when gas readings spike or after seismic activity. Current status and honest odds live in the blue fire guide. Dry-season nights, May to October, give the best odds. The sunrise over the crater lake is the guaranteed half of the show.
For foreigners, 100,000 IDR on weekdays and 150,000 IDR on weekends — about $6 and $9. Every tour compared here includes it. Add the mandatory health certificate at about 50,000 IDR if you are arranging your own climb, and note the mountain is closed the first Friday of every month. Full details in the fees section.
May to October, the dry season: clearest skies, best blue-fire visibility, and a track that is not a mudslide on the way down. July and August bring the biggest crowds — hundreds of headlamps on a good night — so June or September is the sweet spot of weather against elbow room. Month-by-month detail is in the season guide. Pre-dawn temperatures on the rim run 0 to 8°C in the dry months, so the cold is part of the plan whichever month you pick.
That is the standard way to see East Java: combo tours run Surabaya or Malang to Tumpak Sewu waterfall, the Bromo sunrise, then the Ijen night trek, finishing with a ferry to Bali — two days at the tightest, three or four with the waterfall and saner sleep. The train versions from Yogyakarta do the same loop without the night drives. Bromo needs no certificate and its jeep ride is easy; Ijen is the physical one, and it always comes last because of the Bali drop-off geography.
Sulfuric gas escaping the crater vents at high pressure and temperature, igniting on contact with air — flames up to a few metres tall that read electric blue in darkness and are invisible in daylight. Ijen is one of the only places on Earth where the phenomenon burns continuously at a scale tourists can walk to, the other famous site being in Iceland's geothermal fields. The same vents feed the sulfur mine that has worked the crater since 1968.
On Java's eastern tip, between Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, an hour and a half above the coast. The reward at the top runs in sequence: the blue flames in the pre-dawn dark if conditions allow, then sunrise revealing the crater lake — a kilometre wide, 200 m deep, pH near zero, and a shade of turquoise no photograph quite prepares you for — with sulfur steam drifting off the vents and miners already working the shore below.
Plan the night
The detail that does not fit one page: what each format costs and includes, when to go, what to wear, and what the blue fire really shows on an average night.
